PLANNING FOR PLANNERS
How We Used Psychology to Design Decor for SPINCon 16
In mid-November, nearly 200 meeting planners from the Senior Planners Industry Network gathered at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach for SPINCon 16. But two months prior to that, the Koncept Events team started working with event organizers to design the look for the “Brain, Body, Being and Business” conference theme. With an overall focus on wellness, we took a cue from psychological research and studies to craft four distinct rooms, each tied to a conference pillar. With a special thanks to some incredible vendors, here’s how it all came together.
BRAIN - The Purple Room
For all of our rooms, we started with research into color. Purple, which happens to be the favorite color among females, also speaks to creativity, intelligence and ambition. Creative + Intelligent + Ambitious = the Brain of event planners! So…perfect.
It was important for this room to have an elevated luxury feel because purple is also the color of royalty. At the same time, we wanted to make the seating as comfortable as possible because nothing will take you out of a good brain sesh faster than a sore tush! Large sofas, lots of pillows, mirrored accents tables and velour draping were exactly the answer we needed for both requirements.
ROOM SCENT: A blend of Frankincense, Peppermint and Rosemary to promote concentration and clarity.
BODY - The Green Room
To us, Body was a very physical place. So we looked to green, the color of nature, vitality and growth. Along the same line of thought, the décor elements within the room also stayed very physical with grass and wood playing key roles.
Along the back of the room, we placed communal tables with a custom chalkboard encouraging attendees to stand for the session, based on the growing popularity of standing desks and their health benefits. Bronze stools were placed underneath each communal for the perfect foot prop for a change of position when needed.
Because of its numerous body benefits, packets of magnesium were offered as a takeaway. After all, a healthy planner is a happy planner!
ROOM SCENT: Joint efforts of Lavender, Cardamom, Juniper and Geranium to release toxins, soothe nerves and purify the body.
BEING - The Turquoise Room
Turquoise calms emotions, recharges the spirit and invigorates energy levels. So it was the natural choice for our Being room. We created a bistro-type setting, with both white and linened cocktail tables set around a 30’ marble table center focal point. Each table included a glass vase of golf balls, with instructions to attendees to remove their shoes and treat themselves to a foot massage.
ROOM SCENT: A combination of Frankincense, German Chamomile, Lavender and Ylang Ylang to reduce agitation, tension and anxiousness.
BUSINESS - The Blue Room
Blue is across the board the most popular color on the spectrum, so it was no surprise to us when we found it also is a color that inspires trust, conveys dependability and inspires wisdom. We chose this color for our “Business” room because all of those traits are important in a successful business relationship. We also incorporated a strong geometric pattern, which suggests stability and balance, in linens, stage backdrop and pillars along the walls.
The standard hotel chairs were replaced with uber comfortable interlocking chairs with movable desktops while the front of the room seating included a modern grey sofa. Decals with inspirational business-focused quotes were placed throughout the room to enhance the seating because like Sanford I. Weill said, “Details create the big picture.”
ROOM SCENT: A combination of Frankincense, Peppermint and Rosemary to aid in concentration.
THE OTHER STUFF
The conference didn’t stop at the breakout rooms, and neither did we! Here is a look at a few more special touches we brought into the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach.
