KONCEPT EVENTS is a proud member of the GREEN MEETING INDUSTRY COUNCIL. In support of the up-coming #CSRShareDay on Thursday January 20, 2015; we want to encourage everyone in the meetings and events industry to join us in this important conversation. Social media will be booming across multiple forums under the (hashtag) #CSRShareDay, but KE will specifically be partaking on Twitter between 9:00 and 10:00 AM eastern. The first step to changing the way our industry approaches sustainability is entering the conversation. This will open the door for endless possibilities. Looking for some tips…there will be many experts and organizations sharing their vantage points at this time…but here’s a bit about KE’s approach.
As KE has SHARED IN THE PAST, the key to success as you BEGIN to incorporate all the elements that relate to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), is baby steps. Internally, our first steps have included identifying our objectives:
- What do we want our CSR to look like?
- What are we passionate about?
- What drives us to see/make change happen?
As we asked ourselves these questions during the last quarter of 2014, we realized that one aspect of our environment was a huge factor in our discussion – the ocean. With our proximity to it here in South Florida, and with several employees having a passion for one aspect or another of the ocean (sea life, animals, diving, clean-up), we knew that we had landed on a broad yet specific enough area that we could focus our attention on.
In addition to the ocean, our discussion kept circling back to one other area – women. As a female owned company that employs a staff comprised by 86% women, we realized that all of us have been fortunate enough to have access to education, mentors and support in shaping our careers. But there is still a shortage of opportunity for female leadership and this is one area where we want to give back and empower other women and girls to achieve great things.
So now that we had our “giving” plans in place…we began to examine our “green” goals. The environment as a whole is a necessary topic for everyone to contribute to and KE is doing our part by working towards the goal of a zero waste office. Our baby step in 2015 came in the form of composting. With our recently expanded in-house floral department, we realized we had a much larger waste problem on our hands than we had in years past. By identifying this early, we were able to find a local partner – THE URBAN FARMING INSTITUTE IN OAKLAND PARK, and KE set up a weekly pick-up. Currently, we separate all of our floral waste into bags that are designated for composting. The institute stops by the office and collects the items. The process has been a smashing success and we’ve been able to divert 200 pounds of waste into usable compost in just the first weeks of January!
Once we dove in, we realized how easy and fun CSR and green initiatives can be! It is an incredible opportunity to explore these areas of our business and brings us joy in building relationships with other organizations in our community. We will keep you in the loop on our journey as we further develop this side of our brand and we hope to hear from you this #CSRShareDay!
